Sangushki

 

Podhorce zwischen Lemberg und Brody, mit unermesslichem Blick auf die im Norden ausgebreitete wolhynische Ebene am Flusse Styr. In der Ferne leuchtet auf ihrem Sporn die Burg von Olesko. Jan Sobieski wurde dort geboren, der Retter Wiens vor den Tuerken. Schloss und Park Podhorce zaehlen zu den Schoenheiten Galiziens. Beide sind verwildert, die Wasserkuenste tot, die Fuersten Sanguszki fort. Die Zukunft ist mit Brettern vernagelt. Jenseits des Parks trumpft riesenhaft die Schlosskapelle, eine Art Petersdom am Rande Galiziens. All dies ist die Pracht polnischer Herren. Niemand ist gefolgt, der Muse und Macht haette fuer derlei Kunst, zuallerletzt die ruthenischen Diener und Bauern im Dorf dichtbei.........

The Sangushki is a Volynsk prince family of the arms "Pogonia". As it is known, belonging to this arms testified about Lithuanian grand prince Coat of arms "Pogonia"origin. The Sangushkis took the beginning of their family from the Prince Olgerd and belonged to the narrow circle of "main princes", who were included into the structure of the Large council of the Rus-Lithuanian state.

Except for the Sangushkis, there were princes Ostrozki, Koretski, Zbarazki, Zaslavski and so on. The Sangushkis occupied administration posts in Bratslavshchina from the middle of the XVth century. Among their number, Vasil Sangushko became the governor-general in Bratslav and Vinnitsa in 1443 - 1445.

The tradition was continued by his nephew Andrey Olexandrovich, who did the same duties at the beginning of XVIth century. The next generation of the Sangushkis got great land possessions in Bratslavshchina. Fedir Andrijovich Sangushko, Marshalok of Volyn lands, became the Head of Vinnitsa and Bratslav in 1544 - 1547. Earlier, in 1516 - 1517 that post was occupied by his brother Roman Andrijovich.

In the second half of XVIth century the family of Sangushko wasRoman Fedorovich Sangushko glorified by prince Roman Fedorovich, "The favorite of the king Sigizmund Avgust", polniy Lithuanian hetman. A talented colonel of Livon War, he defeated Russian forces for several times, captured many enemy's governors. In 1569 prince Roman continued to win battles while defeating the Tatar army near Uman. For his feats he was appointed the Head of Bratslav and Vinnitsa and in 1566 he became the governor of Bratslav. Being the governor, Roman Sangushko was present at Lublin Sejm which consolidated juridically the formation of a united Polish-Lithuanian state - Rich Pospolita. Roman Fedorovich remained the governor of Bratslav up to 1571, when he died at the age of 34.

During those years a family castle in Iziaslav was built. Next years the Sangushkis continued to play an important role in political life of Bratslavshchina and Podillia, though their mission was not the main then.
Grigoriy Lvovich Sangushko-Kosherskiy was the kashtelian, of Bratslav in 1598 - 1601 and his son Adam-Olexander occupied a post of the governor of Podillia in 1621 - 1630. The burial-vault of the family is situated in Slavuta in St. Dorotha's Cathedral.
